The Story of Xialla: A 20-Year Journey of Innovation and Persistence

The Story of Xialla: A 20-Year Journey of Innovation and Persistence

Twenty years ago, the idea for Xialla emerged from a desire to create a better solution for venous leak and related intimacy challenges. What began as a simple homemade prototype has grown into a patented medical device backed by clinical research and a network of urologist partners.

The Spark: Inspiration from a Fellow Inventor

The journey was inspired by a friend, Bruce Murison — the inventor of the original We-Vibe, the first U-shaped insertable wearable vibrator. A former Nortel employee, Bruce developed his groundbreaking product in his garage using homemade silicone molds and electronics. His success showed that determined innovation could create an entirely new category of intimacy products.

This example encouraged the creation of Xialla as a more effective option for men seeking reliable support for erectile firmness and pleasure.

From Garage Prototype to Refined Design

The earliest Xialla prototypes were made with string and elastic bands. Over time, development advanced through resourceful homemade methods, including injection molds built from Home Depot parts, a syringe for silicone injection, and a c-clamp to compress the mold.

The original design used a waist band that went around the body, down behind the buttocks, and up between the legs to connect to the penile loop. Users stepped into it, and nine sizes were required (three ring sizes combined with three band sizes). While functional, this version highlighted opportunities for greater comfort and simplicity.

A key breakthrough came with the invention of a new mechanism for restraining the ring. This improvement, along with the memorable new name “Xialla” (and the fortunate availability of xialla.com), enabled a fresh start.

Building the Business: Lessons in Resilience

When commercialization began, involvement with investors and entrepreneurs led to the formation of Exia Biomedical Inc. Unfortunately, too much control was relinquished, resulting in the need to close that startup and begin again.

In fall 2019, the new company Xialla Inc. was incorporated. The new ring-restraining mechanism and brand name allowed a clean escape from previous intellectual property restrictions and a stronger foundation for growth.

Critical support came from a manufacturing contact introduced by Bruce Murison: First Technologies Company, owned by Mr. Tim Wong in China. This reliable partnership has been essential for producing high-quality devices.

Choosing the Medical Device Path

From the start, a deliberate choice was made to pursue the medical device route rather than the faster adult toy market. The goal was to maintain strong medical credibility and focus on genuine therapeutic benefits.

This path involved significant work:

  • Achieving FDA compliance through the special provision for this device type.
  • Securing patents for the innovative design.
  • Conducting clinical trials with Dr. Anthony Bella, with results published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
  • Publishing a feature article in the International Journal of Impotence Research (IJIR).

Building Strategic Partnerships

These early milestones enabled the development of a network of urologist partner providers. These physicians refer or prescribe Xialla to their patients, who then order directly from our website. Xialla handles all customer care, warranty support, size adjustments, and fulfillment — allowing doctors to focus on patient treatment without the burden of inventory or after-sales support.
